Ri's Eyes
July 3, 2006
Ri's all eyes and ears in this picture - in fact, that's pretty much all you can see behind the tailgate of the Holloway Bar buggy's trailer.  Ri, in his job as the Holloway Bar guard dog, gets a lot of use out of his eyes and ears when out on patrol guarding the gold.  Between his size (he's a 50 kg German Shepherd) and Mina's ears and smell (she's the camp blind dog), not much moves on Holloway Bar without anyone knowing about it.

We're looking right down into the business end of the gold plant.  This round tube, called the trommel, rests on 7 pairs of tires and is spun by a VW diesel engine.  The slurry of raw ore and water is washed into the upper end of the trommel tube after being dumped into the highest point in the gold plant, and the heavier gold drops from the trommel into the three-run sluice box.  Larger, lighter rocks simply roll out the bottom end of the tube.  A gold plant is just a gravity-based sorting machine that works because the gold is heavier than the material it is found in.

Sky Fire
July 16, 2006
One thing about being an early riser is that you're around to see some beautiful colours in the sky.  Scott captured this "fire in the sky" a couple of mornings ago about 4:40 am when he was getting ready for work.  Dragon Mountain (at least that's what we call it!) gives some of the most colourful and mystic views at both ends of the day.  Looking at this is the best way to get your day started...
Dragon's Mountain
The dragon is well positioned to oversee all of the Holloway Bar operations.  Being perched on a little hill behind camp gives him a beautiful view of the magical and sometimes mystical Dragon Mountain, whether it's lit by a blood-red sky, catching the sun's last rays in the evening, or shrowded in fog.  If you've been watching our webcams, you'll have seen similar sights throughout the day.

Jack and Jill
Since we've been occupied with the rescue of some abandoned baby flycatchers, this seemed to be a fitting picture of the week.  You can watch Jill eat and grow "almost live" on our webcam page or access a compilation of pictures from the past week along with Scott's frequent audio reports on what's happening with the baby bird.  Links can be found on the front page, webcam page, or multimedia page.
