Rainbow
August 7, 2006
Holloway Bar is tucked up into the Cassiar Mountains.  Weather systems swirl through the mountains and often bring a lot of rain showers intermingled with periods of sunshine.  Of course, this is the perfect breeding ground for rainbows.  This particular rainbow ends right on top of the gold plant (which unfortunately can't be seen from camp).  Is this a good omen for a gold mine or what?

By now, you've probably figured out that we've got a soft spot for the various critters that live in this valley.  Scott came across this chipmunk in the greenhouse feasting on this year's crop of greenery.  With their amazing quickness dexterity, these little guys seem to defy gravity and can hang on to just about anything that isn't totally smooth.
Summer Flowers
Summer's short in the Cassiar Mountains.  Between the May snow-melt and the mid-August frosts, the valley springs to life with colours. This is just one example of the many types of plants that grow in the area.  The summer warmth also brings many different varieties of berries, which many people pick to make jams, preserves, and everyone's favourite, pies.

Mirrored Reality

It's all about the gold mining.  That's the main thing that's brought us to this amazing valley, and that's what lets us stay here. The early prospectors first discovered gold here in the mid-1800's and mined for it using lots of hard labour.  We use machines to do the real hard work now, but both us and the old-timers used water - lots and lots of water - to wash away the rocks and muck leaving the gold for us.
