There are some very beautiful sunsets in the North.  In this photo, taken from the eastern shore of Watson Lake one evening last winter, the sun is lighting the sky on fire as is drops down seemingly right through the island in the middle of the lake.  A light mist has formed in the couple of feet above the lake ice creating a slightly fluffy topping for the snow and ice.

Ice fog is a northern phenomenon.  It doesn't occur much in southern climates because it just doesn't get cold enough.  This picture was taken from in front of the Watson Lake town offices looking south across the Alaska Highway on a morning with temperatures of -44 C.  In Watson Lake, cold is never accompanied by wind - you can see the smoke from the chimneys rising almost straight up.  When the temperatures warm, the ice fog will disappear.  Until then, bundle up!

Other areas in the region were also lures to gold seekers.  This rugged canyon is along the infamous South Nahanni River near the Headless Valley, where two gold prospectors, the McLeod brothers, were found dead in the early 1900's, without their gold or their heads. The Nahanni River is only about 200 miles directly north-east of Holloway Bar.  Rumours of gold and strange happenings through this country helped to create a mystery that still lingers today.

Merry Christmas!  This is one present that you'd have a hard time fitting under the Christmas tree, though.  Our family business took delivery of this Twin Otter just before Christmas one year, so it seemed fitting to hang a giant Christmas card on the pilot's door and turn it into the largest Christmas gift we'd ever seen.  We then were blessed with a clear and sunny winter day to roll it out onto the Watson Lake airport ramp for some photos.
